Psalm 23: Implicatory Version
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
Therefore, goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
The Lord is my Shepherd is a statement of faith.
Psalm 23:1 NKJV
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
It has great implications.
The Shepherd is responsible for my upkeep, my well-being, my provision, and my protection
The Shepherd is in charge.
This is no ordinary Shepherd. We’re talking about the Lord, omniscient, omnipotent, loving and caring, patient and merciful.
Our Shepherd is good at His job.
Isaiah 40:11 NKJV He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His bosom, And gently lead those who are with young.
2. The Lord is my Shepherd is a statement of relationship.
The Lord is my shepherd that makes me his sheep. Sheep are weak, fearful, and not very smart animals. We don’t like being sheep. It is an insult to be called sheeple.
Psalm 100:3 NLT Acknowledge that the LORD is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Psalm 100:3 NKJV Know that the LORD, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
We are not called to simply be sheep. Not any ordinary sheep. We are called to be a unique kind of sheep: the Lord‘s. We are the Lord's sheep.
John 10:5 NKJV Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers."
3. The Lord is my Shepherd is a statement of duty.
The sheep has two simple assignments: to simply know its shepherd, and to trust that shepherd.
Know Your Shepherd
John 10:14 NKJV I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own.
John 10:14 NLT "I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me,
John 10:11-13 NKJV "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. [12] But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. [13] The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep.
Trust Your Shepherd
Romans 8:28,31-32 NLT And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
[31] What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? [32] Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won't he also give us everything else?
Romans 8:28,31-32 NKJV And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
[31] What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? [32] He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
4. Every test of faith is a twin test of knowledge and trust.
Every challenge we face in life always tests us on the two points: knowledge of whose we are (relationship) and where we place our trust, (confidence.).
The enemy wants to make us forget whose we are.
The devil tempted Jesus on those same two points… relationship and confidence.
If we forget that we belong to God, our trust, our confidence will shift from Him.
Some trust in horses, some trust in chariots, but we will trust in the Name of our God. (Psalm 20:7)
5. Trust in the Lord keeps us together when we get to the valley.
Psalm 23:4 NKJV
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
The valley is the place of testing and stretching. It is the proving ground of our faith.
The devil is happy to see people trust in anyone or anything but the Lord.
The prodigal son forgot whose he was, and left home, trusting in himself.
He was restored when he remembered whose son he was and trusted in his father.
Psalm 16:8 NKJV
I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.
6. Trust in the Lord is our assurance of victory.
Believer and unbeliever alike, everybody will face adversity in life.
Job 14:1 NLT "How frail is humanity! How short is life, how full of trouble!
Job 14:1 NKJV "Man who is born of woman Is of few days and full of trouble.
Luke 6:47-49 NLT I will show you what it's like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. [48] It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. [49] But anyone who hears and doesn't obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins."
Whether or not one trusts in the Lord, life will bring challenges and trouble of all kinds.
It is naive to think faith will give us an easy passage. We are guaranteed a safe landing, not a safe passage.
Faith in God does not prevent trouble, it only guarantees that we will overcome.
1 John 5:4 NKJV
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world-our faith.
When trouble comes, those who trust in the Lord can rest assured that He will come through.
Not trusting in the Lord is hell on earth.
Psalm 9:17 NKJV
The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God.
For those who do not trust in the Lord, life’s troubles will practically be hell on earth.
