Servant (Doulos in Greek) is someone who sets aside all rights of their own to serve another
The Duty of a Servant
Be willing and available
1 Samuel 3:10 NLT “And the Lord came and called as before, “Samuel, Samuel!” and Samuel replied, “speak, your servant is listening.”
Be humble
Matthew 20:26 NLT “But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant.”
Serve with gladness
Psalm 100:2 NKJV “Serve the Lord with gladness; come before His presence with singing.”
Serve with all your heart
Deuteronomy 10:12 NKJV “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”
Die daily
Luke 9:23 NKJV “Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”
You were bought at a high price
Knowing Who’s Lord
Romans 10:9 NKJV “That if you confess with your mouth that JESUS IS LORD and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
1 Corinthians 8:6 ERV “For us there is only ONE GOD, and HE us our Father. All things came from Him and we live for Him. And there is only ONE LORD, Jesus Christ. All things were made through Him and whom we live.”
Matthew 28:18 NLT “Jesus came and told His disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.”
To be a servant of Christ you must seek His will in all things. You are not Lord over your life - Jesus is.
Luke 6:46 NLT “So why do you keep calling me “Lord, Lord” when you don’t do the things I say?”
How does God receive glory when we serve?
The transforming power of Jesus is on display when we put aside our ways and serve.
1 Peter 4:10-11 NLT “God has given each of you a gift from His great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God Himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to Him forever and ever! Amen.”
1 Corinthians 10:31 NLT So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
1 Corinthians 12: 5 NLT “There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord.”
The way in which you serve, does not diminish the magnitude of the glory you are giving to God
1 Corinthians 12:14-23 NLT “Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part. 15 If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand”, that does not make it any less part of the body. 16 And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye”, would that make it any less a part of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything? 18 But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where HE wants it. 19 How strange a body would be if it had only one part! 20 Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. 21 The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.” 22 In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. 23 And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen...”
When we shine the spotlight on God instead of ourselves, He gets the glory when we serve.
Servants in the Bible
Job
“Then the Lord asked satan, “Have you noticed my servant, Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless – a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil.” Job 1:8 NLT
Peter
“This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ…” 2 Peter 1:1 NLT
Paul & Apollos
“Afterall, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us.” 1 Corin. 3:5 | Phill 1:1, Romans 1:1, Titus 1:1
How do you introduce yourself to others?
Daniel
“If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us…” Daniel 3:17 NLT
JESUS
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 NLT
Philippians 2: 7-8 NLT “Instead, He gave up His divine privileges; He took the humble position of a slave and was born a human being. When He appeared in human form, 8 He humbled Himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.”
The King of kings washed feet 👣
1 John 3:16 NKJV “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for our brethren.”
Serving others
Philippians 2:4 NLT “Don’t look out only for your own interests but take an interest in others too.”
Keep your eyes and ears open for ways to love others by serving them.
Galatians 6:2-3 NLT “Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. 3 If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.”
Love is the focal point of serving
John 13:34-35 NLT “So now I am giving you a new commandment: love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are MY disciples.”
He calls us friend
John 15: 14-17 NLT “You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told Me. 16 You didn’t choose Me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. This is my command: love each other.”
