ELEMENTS OF THE GOSPEL

(First the bad news, then the good news.)

Christ came to save us from God, not merely from the devil.

Luke 12:4-5 NLT

"Dear friends, don't be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot do any more to you after that. [5] But I'll tell you whom to fear. Fear God, who has the power to kill you and then throw you into hell. Yes, he's the one to fear.

  1. God made man for His own glory.

In the beginning, God created the world and all in it including man. God as King and lawgiver, set His law in place.

Genesis 1:26-27 LSB

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, so that they will have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” [27] And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

We were created by God to represent Him on earth and to have dominion over His other creations.

Revelation 4:11 NLT

"You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased."

2. Man sinned against God

Romans 5:12-14 NLT

When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam's sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. [13] Yes, people sinned even before the law was given. But it was not counted as sin because there was not yet any law to break. [14] Still, everyone died-from the time of Adam to the time of Moses-even those who did not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did. Now Adam is a symbol, a representation of Christ, who was yet to come.

Sin: not merely wrongdoing, or a mistake. Sin is disobedience to God, a subversion of His purpose, an affront to God as creator, owner and lawgiver.

Psalms 51:4 (NLT) Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just.

3. The consequence of sin is the wrath of God, which brings the penalty of death.

Sickness, disease, death, war, natural disasters, etc are all the consequences of God’s wrath. Man is so confused by sin that he is afraid of all the outcomes but he is not mindful of the cause… the wrath of God.

Colossians 3:5-6 (NLT)“So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy for a greedy person is an idolator worshiping the things of this world.

[5] (voice) It's because of these that God's wrath is coming [upon the sons and daughters of disobedience], so avoid them at all costs.

4. God is merciful so He sent His Son to save us from our just recompense, and to reconcile us to Himself.

John 3:16-17 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.

Romans 3:21-26 NLT But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago. [22] We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. [23] For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard. [24] Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. [25] For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, [26] for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.

5. In order to be saved we must believe in Jesus alone, and repent from our sins.

Romans 10:9-10 NLT

If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.

Jesus is the only way to be saved.

Acts 4:12 LSB And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”

1 Timothy 2:5-6 NLT

For, There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity-the man Christ Jesus. [6] He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone. This is the message God gave to the world at just the right time.

  • It is not enough to believe. We must actually repent.

2 Peter 3:9 LSB

The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some consider slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

Matthew 3:8 NLT (John the Baptist’s preaching)

Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.

What is repentance?

2 Corinthians 7:9-10 LSB

I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to repentance. For you were made to have godly sorrow, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us. [10] For godly sorrow produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world brings about death.

Repentance is a change of mind resulting in a change of behavior. It begins with  a true regret for one’s action. This is not merely because we do not like the consequences, but it is a godly sorrow for having broken God’s commands. This leads us to the confession of our sins, accompanied by a determination not to return to the same behavior.

6.When we truly believe, repent and receive the Son by faith, God promised we will cross over from death to life and will be reconciled back to Him.

1 John 5:12 NLT

Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God's Son does not have life.

2 Corinthians 5:17-21 NLT

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! [18] And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. [19] For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people's sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. [20] So we are Christ's ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, "Come back to God!" [21] For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
