Matthew 6:31-33 NKJV
"Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' [32] For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. [33] But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Like every other human, believers in Jesus also have many needs… food, clothing, housing, health, security, peace.
Luke 11:9-13 NKJV
"So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. [10] For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. [11] If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? [12] Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? [13] If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
God is a good Father and we can trust Him to meet all our needs, including those needs we do not yet realize we have.
Jesus taught us to pray and ask God for our daily bread. In this text, He is showing us what God considers to be more important than our necessary food; what God really wants to give us.
We are no different from unbelievers if our desires are limited to the things of this life. If our prayers are mostly about the same things that preoccupy the minds of unbelievers, we are missing out on God’s best. Believers are distinguished by
(a) the realization of our spiritual need,
(b) and the knowledge that only by the Spirit of God can that need be met.
Before salvation, Jesus is God’s best gift. (John 3:16)
After we are saved, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Jesus, is God’s best gift.
Luke 24:49 NKJV
Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
The Holy Spirit is literally the Gift that keeps on giving. He is the gift of God, and He comes bearing gifts.
Isaiah 11:2 NKJV
The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.
1 Corinthians 12:4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all.
Not only does the Holy Spirit give us gifts, but He also cultivates fruits in us.
Galatians 5:22-23 NLT
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!
The gifts are given so we can act like Jesus, perform like Him, in wisdom and in power, but the fruit is produced so that we can actually become like Christ.
Without the fruit, we will only be actors and not real.
Romans 8:9 NLT
But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.).
Fruit and Gift.
How do we know if you have the Spirit?
There is a two-step authentication… Fruit and gift. We need both. Sadly, we often emphasize one over the other.
The fruit of the Spirit of Christ is the first step of our two-step authentication.
Matthew 7:16-20 NKJV
You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? [17] Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. [18] A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. [19] Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. [20] Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
The gifts of the Spirit of Christ is the second step of our two-step authentication.
1 Corinthians 12:7 NLT
A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.
Authority and Power.
The fruit of the Holy Spirit gives us our mandate, our authority. The gifts of the Spirit give us power.
Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. [19] Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, [20] teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.
Jesus sent us to go out in His authority.
John 17:18 NKJV
As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
We have His authority, but authority without power makes us useless, unproductive in God’s Kingdom.
Luke 24:49 NKJV
Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
Power without authority makes us fake, and puts us at great spiritual risk with eternal consequences.
Matthew 7:22-23 NKJV
Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' [23] And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
This is why Jesus encourages us to thirst for His Spirit.
John 7:37-39 NKJV
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. [38] He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." [39] But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Matthew 17:18-21 NKJV
And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour. [19] Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" [20] So Jesus said to them, "Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. [21] However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
